Where Can AI Create Immediate Business Value?

How to identify realistic AI opportunities in knowledge access, documents, workflows and decision support without overpromising transformation.

Start where work already has friction

AI creates the most immediate value when it is attached to a real operational bottleneck. Good candidates include policies that are hard to search, forms that require manual review, repetitive email triage, long documents that need summaries, and internal support questions that consume experienced staff time.

This is different from asking where AI sounds impressive. A practical AI roadmap starts with work patterns: what employees search for, what they retype, where decisions stall, and which documents or systems hold trusted answers.

Adoption is already happening, so governance matters

Microsoft and LinkedIn’s Work Trend Index has consistently shown that employees are moving quickly with AI while leaders look for a path to business value. That creates a gap: people want useful tools, but organizations need security, policy, permission design and clear expectations.

That is why AI consulting should include readiness assessment, use-case prioritization, governance and proof-of-concept planning. The goal is not to slow adoption. The goal is to make useful AI safer, more consistent and easier to support.

Look for source-grounded workflows

For many organizations, the best first solution is a knowledge assistant grounded in approved documents, policies, procedures or service information. Source-grounded responses help users verify where an answer came from and reduce the risk of unsupported claims.

The same principle applies to document processing and automation. AI can help classify, summarize or extract information, but high-value workflows still need permissions, auditability, human review and clear escalation paths.
